FOOD SUMMIT IN NAKAMURA GAKUEN GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL
The overall theme of our SGH class is “Fostering Global Leaders by Exploring Global Food Issues”. As part of that, we hosted the “Food Summit” like last year. This year’s summit took place on July 28th and was held at our school. This year’s theme was “Various Problems and Solutions Surrounding Water and Food”. Four overseas teams (from the U.S.A., Malaysia, Korea, and Uzbekistan) and two Japanese teams (from Ochanomizu University Junior High School and Nakamura Gakuen Girls’ High School) took part in the final round.
Building on our experience from last year’s Food Summit, we were able to begin preparations for this year’s event by holding online meetings with the teams from the U.S. and from Malaysia well in advance of the Food Summit itself.
On July 27th, the day before the Food Summit, all the teams gathered at our school and held a pre-conference to discuss their ideas, confirm the progress of the conference, and—most importantly—to create the joint declaration to be presented at the end of the Food Summit’s final presentations.
The next day, on July 28th, the final stage of the Food Summit began. Each team presented their findings in three steps: first, a short movie summarizing the issue and solutions ; second, a speech and slideshow presentation in English giving more detail ; and finally, a question/answer session taking questions. Each presentation demonstrated acute awareness of the teams’ chosen problems, and presented solutions rich in innovative thinking and showing unique perspectives. Deciding which team would earn recognition for the best presentation was a toss-up. In the end, the judges chose the Malaysian team who addressed water, health, and environmental improvement through utilization of native plant “Taiwan Momiji”.
The culmination of the program was the joint declaration. The students presented the action plan created from the discussions. Representative students read the joint declaration, and presented a hard copy to the Food Summit chairperson, Mr. Yuji Soejima, Deputy Director of Kyushu University.
All-in-all, the Food Summit 2018 was a success. Students from around the world shared their ideas, gained insight into each others’ perspectives, and learned from each other. We hope that all the participants will cherish the memory of this event and use what they gained from this experience for the rest of their lives.
