With our new first-year students, we started the year by focusing on some of the fundamentals of English: the be-verb, pronouns, determiners, the plural (both countable and uncountable nouns!), adjectives, and the like. The main focus was building up our students’ vocabulary and getting them used to English lessons being taught in English. Now, after the term exams, we have started introducing verbs to students in larger quantities. Recently, the students have been practicing describing their daily routines in pairs and groups. They have also been getting used to describing pictures. As this summer’s extracurricular classes start, the goal for the next couple of weeks is to familiarize students with the present tense and the present progressive and make sure they are comfortable with using both. We will also introduce a lot of new vocabulary in preparation for Pre A1 Starters, the first Cambridge English exam our students are taking in October. This important milestone is rapidly approaching, but I have no doubt the students will do a great job.

中学1年生の授業では、今後の英語学習の基礎となるbe動詞や、代名詞などから学びはじめました。さらには、名詞の単数形、複数形では可算名詞や不可算名詞のような高校生でも難しいものにも挑戦しました。
私たちが最も大事にしていることは生徒の語彙数を増やすこと、そして英語で行う授業に早く慣れてもらうことでした。期末考査が終わった現在では、たくさんの動詞を学びはじめました。最近では、生徒たちはペアやグループ活動を通して日常生活で使える表現を学んだり、絵に描かれている状況を英語で説明する練習を行いました。夏休みの課外授業では、この数週間のうちに現在形と現在進行形について学び、それらを使いこなせるように練習しました。2学期からは新しい文法や表現をたくさん学んでいきます。これまでに習ったことを復習しながら、今後の学習につなげていきます。また、10月に受験する初めてのケンブリッジ英検のために、たくさんの新しい単語を学ぶ予定です。大きな目標は確実に近づいていますが、私たちは生徒が日頃の取り組みの成果を発揮してくれると確信しています。

Our second-year students have recently been tackling comparatives and superlatives. They have been comparing restaurant menus and discussing some of the most famous things in Japan and around the world. The second-year students will be focusing on ailments and giving advice next, but during the summer we will also take an in-depth look at cities and some of the more complex prepositions of place that the students will be using to describe locations. There will be plenty of opportunities for role plays and conversations, and I’m sure it will be fun. During the summer, the students will also have an opportunity to check their progress toward A2 Key, their next Cambridge English examination, by taking a mock-test. It will no doubt be challenging, but it is important for the students to get used to the test format, and there’s no better way to do that than by actually taking the test!

2年生は、比較級と最上級について学びました。レストランのメニューを見比べたり、日本や世界中で最も有名なものは何かを考えたりしながら文法を習得しました。次に、人にアドバイスや助言を与えるときに使えるshouldの使い方や場所を表す前置詞を学びました。会話やロールプレイを通して実生活で使える英語を学びました。2学期からは文法の指導にも力を入れて、4技能のさらなる養成に努めて参ります。次回に受検するA2 Keyのために模擬テストなどを通して力を身につけていきます。
