Hello there! My name is Juha Vaittinen and I’m originally from Finland. I’ve been working as an English teacher in Japan for seven years, and while I can’t say I’ve gotten used to all the local quirks yet, it’s been a lot of fun so far! I’ve been involved with Cambridge here in Fukuoka for a couple of years now, first as a speaking examiner and more recently also as a teacher trainer. My duties at Nakamura Gakuen include teacher training, facilitating various aspects of the school’s Cambridge Programme, and, of course, teaching.

For me, being part of the Cambridge Programme at Nakamura has been challenging, but also very rewarding. The primary language in the classroom is English, which often requires a lot of effort and careful planning from the teachers. We’re also using a lot of tech in the classroom, which enriches the classroom experience for both teachers and students!

In the university, I majored in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and after graduation my plan was to look for work as an English teacher in Finland. But then I bumped into an advertisement on the Japanese embassy website about JET, an English teaching programme in Japan. It sounded like a perfect match – I’d gain experience as a teacher, improve my Japanese and get to live in a foreign country for a year or two. Never did I think that I’d end up staying, but that’s exactly what happened! I am looking forward to making new friends in Nakamura Gakuen!

みなさんこんにちは！フィンランド出身のユハ・ヴァイッティネンです。日本で英語教育に関わって7年、まだまだ慣れたとは言えませんが、日本での暮らしを満喫しています。ここ数年で、ケンブリッジ英検の面接官や教員養成トレーナーとして関わる機会があり、この4月から中村学園女子中学校でケンブリッジ英語の指導を担当することになりました。

新しい環境にドキドキしていますが、楽しみながらスタートでき嬉しく思います。教室での使用言語はもちろん英語です。みなさんが楽しく英語を学べるよう、先生たちで綿密に計画を立てて授業を行っています。また、iPadやアプリを使いながら五感をフル活用する授業は、生徒のみなさんにとっても先生たちにとっても刺激的です。

英語教育を専攻し6年、大学卒業時にフィンランドで英語教師の仕事を探し始めた時、日本大使館がALTを募集している公告を目にしました。日本語をもっと学べること、英語教師として経験を積めること、海外で生活すること･･･私にとって完璧な組み合わせでした。これから中村学園で過ごす中で出会うであろう新しいご縁に日々ワクワクしています。これからどうぞよろしくお願いします！
